Never Leave Without Camping First Aid Kits!

Murphy's Law goes 'anything that can go wrong, will go wrong' – if you believe that, then you should always take a camping first aid kit with you when you are going on a camping trip.  They don't take much space, and they are always useful to have just in case there is an accident.  The chances are nothing will go wrong, but if you don't have your first aid kit with you, and someone does get injured, then you will regret it.

A Basic First Aid Kit

It is possible to make a simple first aid kit from supplies you already have at home, or you can buy a specially made first aid kits from a camping store or sporting goods store.  The most important thing is that the first aid kit is small, portable, in a waterproof container, and they contain everything you need.  If you are making your own first aid kit, then put everything in ziplock bags to keep it safe and dry.

All camping first aid kits should have:

Band Aids
Surgical Tape
Scissors
Tweezers
Sterile roll of bandages
Sterile pads
An antibiotic ointment
A place to put emergency phone numbers
Tea tree oil OR an anti-itch lotion

Naturally, you should add to this list if you or anyone in your traveling party has any medical conditions.

A Few More Tips

Depending on the kind of camping trip, you may want to make several first aid kits.  A trip in an RV is fine with just one large first aid kit, but if you will be roughing it in the wilderness then you may want to split the first aid kit up into several smaller kits for each member of your party. That way, the load is shared, and should one kit go missing or get damaged then it is not too much of a problem.

Another good idea is to get a cheap pay as you go mobile phone and put some minutes on it.  Leave your normal phone at home, but keep this one with you for emergencies.  If the phone gets stolen it is not too much of a problem, and should you need to contact anyone in an emergency you will be able to.

Good points, but one extra tip. Check your first aid kit before you go away - you may have used something last time and forgotten to replace it, or something like painkillers might have gone out of code.

I have been using the same first aid kit - a nice tough blue waterproof one with a carry handle and lots of pockets, for years - almost everything except the bandages has been opened and replaced by now, but the kit has proven invaluable.

There is nothing worse than going to the first aid kit for something and finding it missing - especially when it's your anti motion sickness pills, so make a list, and check everything!

Nice post for those who enjoy camping, I also think that knowing something about surviving under extreme circumstances would help, you never know where you might end up being at, so it would be nice to read articles about that, or even getting a book guide.  I've never been camping in the middle of a forest for example, but it seems cool :)
