RV Camping In The Winter: Essential Tips

RV camping is a great way to take a vacation, but RV camping in the winter is a little different.  It can be an exciting adventure, but is not one you should try without some careful planning.

Do Your Homework

If you are thinking of trying RV camping in the winter, you should carefully research places that will be open first – many camp sites close during the winter months.

There are some that are open all year round, and many of them offer discounted rates during the winter.  Call up the sites that you are interested in so that you can get some idea of your options.

Never head out into unchartered areas that don’t have actual RV camping facilities. While it may seem like an adventure to go off the beaten path, stick to the main roads and actual camping locales. You could put your family in unnecessary danger by driving through unplowed roads or camping in a snowy area that could prove difficult to drive out of.

Prepare Your Vehicle For the Winter

Before you hit the road with your RV, make sure it is ready for winter traveling – if you own the RV, take it to a dealer to get it checked and serviced before you leave.  You don't want it to break down leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere in the cold.

Make sure that the tanks are filled with fuel, and that there are no leaks.  Make sure that the tires are fresh and checked for wear too, and purchase chains if you will be driving through snow.

Pack for the winter too – pack extra blankets, gloves, hats, and socks.  Make sure that the pantry is stocked with lots of food, and that it will keep for a decent length of time.  If you get stranded in the cold the extra clothes and food and water could save your life.

Hopefully you will not need the extra gear, but it always pays to be prepared.  RV camping in the winter can be a nice little adventure, but you should take it seriously and be prepared for getting snowed in!
