The private sector in the state of Illinois features several lodges, resorts and camping sites complete with amenities, facilities and fun-filled activities. The public sector has several state parks and recreation areas as well. The numbers were based from a study conducted by the Office of Recreation and Park Resources at the University of Illinois. Northern Illinois has the most number of campsites at 17,386 but only 3,624 of these are owned by the public sector. There are 163 sites per campground in the northern area.
